Innovative on-demand ride sharing in Austria’s rural areas
In summer 2018, people in the Klopeiner See region, Austria, benefited from an innovative demand responsive transit service operated by Austria’s leading passenger transport provider ÖBB Postbus.
Providing efficient public transit for residentials and tourists is challenging in the scattered rural area running from the centre of Sankt Kanzian to the tourist hotspots further away. ÖBB Postbus decided to test a new on-demand ride sharing shuttle service that would improve the service level and cover the entire area.
During the three month pilot, two 8-seater mini-vans were in operation. ÖBB Postbus made use of our passenger app, which allowed booking and real time tracking of Postbus Shuttle, our driver app, which was installed on a tablet computer and directed the driver to pick-up and drop-off locations in accordance to demand, and our transit agent cockpit, which allowed planning and operating Postbus Shuttle.
Postbus Shuttle combined the cost effectiveness of public transport with the convenience of personalised transit. Powered by the sophisticated technology of UFT, algorithms seamlessly matched passengers traveling in the same direction and dynamically routed vehicles in real-time to find the optimal route for their trip. The UFT platform allowed to add constraints on frequency and routes for trips to tourist spots, improving availability significantly. The service was synchronised with train schedules at the stations of Tainach-Stein and Völkermarkt-Kühnsdorf.
